Why She Booked Her First Boudoir Session

Mrs. J found out about us through a close friend who had done a boudoir shoot for her wedding. “She spoke about how empowering it was and it really stuck with me,” she shared. But it wasn’t until her own personal milestone that she decided to take the leap.

“After losing 90 pounds, I knew I needed something to help me truly see the transformation,” she said. “Body dysmorphia is such a powerful thing; for so long, I still saw the same woman in the mirror, no matter the progress I’d made. But this experience changed everything. For the first time, I saw myself through a lens of strength, confidence, and beauty.” The fact that she chose to celebrate a 90-pound weight loss with a photo shoot instead of a scale is the kind of shift I live for!!

That’s what boudoir does at its best. It helps women not only celebrate their bodies, but finally see them for what they really are—resilient, beautiful, and worth honoring.

Why Blacklight and LED?

For Mrs. J, the theme wasn’t just about look of the shoot, it was about feeling safe and a little spontaneous at the same time, which was such an interesting way to look at it that I didn’t really think about.

“For someone who’s always been so body-conscious, this session felt like the perfect balance of safety and spontaneity—the low lighting created a sense of comfort, while the experience itself was unexpectedly fun and freeing!”

That mix of playfulness and privacy is what makes the blacklight boudoir theme one of our most loved mini sessions. It’s bold, it’s artistic, and it brings out a version of yourself you didn’t even know you had in you.

The Experience: More Than Just a Photoshoot

When Mrs. J walked into our Phoenix boudoir studio, she was greeted with glam, guidance, and good vibes.

“The experience began with a pampering session—gorgeous hair and makeup that made me feel truly radiant,” she said. “As a big introvert, it usually takes me a while to feel comfortable around new people, but Miranda has this calming, confident presence that instantly puts you at ease.” Creating trust is something I take seriously. I want you to feel like you’re not just stepping into a photo shoot and studio, you’re stepping into a space where you can just be you without judgement. Just love and support!

Once we had her styled and set, we jumped into the glow-in-the-dark magic. And when we asked what her favorite part was? “The body painting photos of course!!” she said. Sure, we created this theme because it is incorporated some fun, new lighting styles and an artistic spin on traditional boudoir, but as we do more of these themed sessions we are seeing that this theme in particular gives you this out-of-body moment, where you stop focusing on flaws and just feel free.

Facing the Fear, Finding Herself

Of course, nerves are normal. Mrs. J was no exception. “My husband rarely sees me in that little clothing—with the lights on, no less! 😂 Honestly, I was terrified I still wouldn’t like the woman I saw in the photos. But I realized our biggest challenge is usually ourselves.” Instead of spiraling, she paused. She reminded herself: I deserve to feel happy and confident in my own skin. I always say, nerves are a sign you care. If you weren’t at least a little nervous, it wouldn’t mean anything to you.

And guess what? It worked. “To my surprise, I felt completely at ease—confident in a way I hadn’t experienced before.” What’s wild is that so many women walk in anxious and unsure, and leave walking taller than they have in years.

The Afterglow: Confidence That Lasts

So what happened after the shoot? “My confidence has grown so much! I might not fit society’s idea of ‘perfect,’ but I’ve worked damn hard to get here—and I’m proud as hell of the woman I’ve become.” I hear this from so many women! It’s so easy to overlook how far we’ve come when we’re stuck seeing the “old version” of ourselves in the mirror. There’s something really powerful about taking the thing you’re most self-conscious about and making it the reason you show up. There’s a different kind of glow that comes from owning your body after you’ve worked hard for it. It’s not about reaching a certain level of perfection, it’s about pride in your journey and in yourself.

That right there is the real glow-up. And it had nothing to do with makeup or lighting. Boudoir photography gave Mrs. J a new perspective, and a reason to finally celebrate herself. That mental and physical change from “hiding” to choosing to say “here I am”gets me every single time!

What She Wants You to Know If You’re Nervous

Mrs. J gets it. Stepping in front of a camera can feel vulnerable, especially if you’re not used to seeing yourself in a positive light.

But here’s her advice: “The best experiences often come from facing your fears head-on. Give yourself the chance to see yourself through a new, empowering lens and you might be surprised by what you discover.”

In fact, she recommends boudoir to everyone: “The confidence you gain from seeing yourself through a new, empowering perspective is truly priceless and something you will carry forever.”

Boudoir Helped Reframe Her Body Image

Even after losing 90 pounds, body dysmorphia still had its grip. “Body dysmorphia may never fully disappear, but these photos remind me just how far I’ve come, and how much courage it took to step outside my comfort zone, despite the fear and doubt. True growth comes from facing those vulnerable moments head-on and choosing to believe in your strength, even when it feels hardest to do so.”

Every time someone trusts me with their story, especially one as personal as this, I’m reminded how important it is to create a space where women feel seen. As you can tell, this was so much more than a photo shoot. It was healing, powerful, and full of light—literally and emotionally.

And now she will have these images as reminders. Proof of strength. Milestones of growth. That’s what boudoir can do when it meets you exactly where you are!

Ready to See Yourself in a New Light?

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and struggled to connect with the person looking back at you, you’re not alone. Mrs. J’s story is a beautiful reminder that boudoir photography can be the bridge between where you’ve been and where you’re going.

Boudoir Photography After Breast Cancer: A Survivor’s Empowering Story in Phoenix, Arizona

What does boudoir photography look like after breast cancer? For many survivors, it’s more than a photo shoot—it’s a healing ritual. She was coming in for her second boudoir session—and this time, the meaning behind the experience hit a little deeper. In this blog, I share the courageous story of “Mrs. A,” who returned to our Mesa studio. “I really wanted to do the photoshoot after my double mastectomy to help me learn and appreciate my new body.” That one line stuck with me. “A” isn’t alone. Many women come to me after experiencing major changes—pregnancy, divorce, weight loss, surgery, loss, or illness. But coming in after something as emotional and transformative as breast cancer takes a special kind of strength. And while A may have been the one stepping in front of the camera, I can tell you this—she’s not just strong. She’s powerful. Through her journey, you’ll see how boudoir became a powerful tool for reclaiming her body, her beauty, and her voice.

Let me walk you through what this experience looked like for her and share her powerful story.

A Boudoir Journey Rooted in Strength and Survival

When Mrs. A first stepped into my Phoenix boudoir studio, she had already faced one of life’s most formidable challenges: breast cancer. Her journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery was marked by resilience, courage, and an unwavering desire to reclaim her sense of self. Returning for her second boudoir session, A sought not just photographs but a celebration of her survival and the strength she discovered along the way. What brought her back for a second session?

“It was scary, to be honest. The first time, I was still SUPER nervous. I was nervous putting myself out beyond my comfort zone. Same as my second session.”

That’s totally normal. No matter how many times you do something vulnerable, it can still feel scary. Her second session wasn’t focused on just the final photos. It was about the experience, and honoring a new chapter—one that had been hard-earned through surgeries, treatments, and growth. Stepping into a boudoir session isn’t always about feeling sexy. Sometimes, it’s about reclaiming something. Feeling seen, and feeling real. And A showed up with all those feelings, ready to take that brave step again.

Why She Chose Another Boudoir Session After Cancer Treatment

Mrs. A’s decision to document this chapter of her life through boudoir photography was deeply personal. After a whirlwind of medical appointments and treatments where decisions often felt out of her hands, this session was something she chose entirely for herself.

“There are truly no words, or I cannot articulate,” she reflected. “It was empowering. I dug deep to even schedule it and honestly follow through. I came up with a million ways to cancel. Gifting my husband the photos—he teared up and was so happy to see I could even do this.”

This act of vulnerability and strength was not just a gift to her husband but a profound statement of self-love and acceptance. This vulnerability is incredibly real and relatable. So how had her perspective shifted between the first session and this one? “I am trying to feel comfortable in my own skin.” Still, she showed up. And that alone was a massive win.

A Tattoo with Purpose: Floral Ink to Celebrate Healing

One of the most striking aspects of A’s journey is the floral tattoo she chose to adorn her chest post-mastectomy. Each flower holds significant meaning, representing different facets of her identity and experiences.

“I have a floral tattoo spanning across my chest. I wanted to see art instead of scars. I wanted to see something that was mine.”

When we talked about the session ahead of time, we didn’t plan to photograph her chest openly. That part of her body had been through so much—it was a very personal decision. But something shifted during the session.

“I wasn’t going to show my chest, but then I realized this is the most powerful and beautiful part of me now.” It was a moment. And it was hers and hers alone.

“I wanted to decide what I wanted. This was the one thing I felt like I had control over. I didn’t need to see a nipple; I needed to see what I wanted: poppies—state flower for California, where I grew up; lavender—I love the smell; morning glories—a fresh start.”

This tattoo became a powerful symbol of her resilience, a personal reclamation of her body, and a celebration of her roots and new beginnings. A chose to reclaim her chest with an artful tattoo that holds deep meaning. Each flower was chosen intentionally—symbols of her home, her preferences, her rebirth.

Reclaiming Her Body—Scars, Strength, and All

There’s this thing that happens during boudoir sessions that I’ve seen over and over again—clients walk in nervous, unsure, questioning if they can really go through with it… and by the end, something changes. They open up. They soften. They surprise themselves. That’s exactly what happened with A.

During the session, A made a spontaneous decision that marked a significant moment in her healing journey. I asked her, “Was there a moment during your session that stood out to you—one that felt healing or empowering?”

“Yes! I was not comfortable with showing my chest. It was at the end when I said I want to have pictures of the big pictures. Scars, tattooed and all. That was a last-minute decision, and I surprised myself.”

Feeling safe is everything. Creating a space where someone can make an in-the-moment decision like that, and feel completely supported—it’s one of the most meaningful parts of what I do. Choosing to photograph her scars and tattoos was a bold act of self-acceptance, turning what many might hide into a proud testament of survival and strength. Despite initial hesitation, she made a powerful decision at the end of her shoot: When the camera captures not just your body, but your bravery.

Boudoir as a Catalyst for Emotional Healing

When I asked A if her boudoir sessions felt like a part of her healing journey, her answer was an instant and powerful “Absolutely.” She told me, “Full circle. I cried driving there. Second guessing my decisions to do it. Worried how the pictures will turn out, second-guessing the outfits I chose.”

That kind of honesty hits home for so many of us. It’s that vulnerable, heart-racing moment right before you do something brave—where your fear tries to keep you small, but you show up anyway. The emotional rollercoaster she felt on the way to the studio was real. But even more real? The transformation that happened once she allowed herself to be seen. This wasn’t just about taking photos—it was about reclaiming control, finding softness in the chaos, and giving herself permission to feel beautiful again in a body that’s been through so much. For A, this session was an act of self-respect. A way to say, “I’m still here. And I deserve to be celebrated.”

And when she shared the finished images with her husband, “He teared up and was so happy to see I could even do this.” That moment alone made all the second-guessing worth it. Boudoir was more than an experience for A—it was a release. A bold, healing, emotional release that reminded her of who she is beneath the scars, fear, and doubt. And that reminder? It’s everything.

Advice for Women Who’ve Been Through Life-Changing Events

A’s experience offers a powerful message to other women who may be hesitant to embrace boudoir photography, especially after significant life changes.

“Fucking do it. We have done hard things, and we still can. We did not suffer through treatment, body alterations to not celebrate that.”

Her words serve as a rallying cry for women to honor their journeys, embrace their bodies, and celebrate their resilience.  For anyone on the fence about booking a boudoir session after trauma, surgery, or self-doubt, A’s message is for you!

When Mrs. A saw her photos from this session for the first time, her reaction was exactly what we hope for with every single client: “Strength, powerful, and damn I am still sexy.” “Beauty is strength. Scars, stretch marks, weight—women are powerful. We all have a story. If this is for someone or just for yourself, it is empowering and as women we deserve it. I did not want my scars photoshopped. I earned those.” This session wasn’t about looking perfect. It was about being real. And what’s more beautiful than that? Through this experience, Mrs. A redefined her own perception of beauty.

A’s journey underscores the transformative power of boudoir photography. It’s not merely about capturing images but about embracing every chapter of one’s story with pride and authenticity.
